Five Contemporary Art Perspectives in the Austrian Pavilion at EXPO 2025, Osaka
Peaceful orders, international alliances, societies, and the relationships between people and nature — and between people themselves — are often held together by delicate balance. In today’s world, many of these systems are out of sync: people are displaced, the environment is suffering, and equilibrium is lost.
The five artworks presented here, created with connections to Austria (and one to Liechtenstein), also reflect links to many parts of the world. Each piece explores disruption — and what follows in its wake. Human actions are often at the root of the imbalance, yet all the works express a shared longing: a desire to restore dignity, connection, and harmony.
Each month, one of these works takes center stage. It will be shown at the following fixed times in the 3D HOLOBOX at the Austrian Pavilion at EXPO 2025:
10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 17:00, 18:00, 20:00, 21:00, 21:30

The AEC is a European cultural and educational network for institutions providing professional music training. In a special event at the EXPO 2025, over 100 talented young singers studying at AEC member institutions will come together to form a choir with their contemporaries from Japan, in a celebration of beauty, diversity and shared identity.
Under the baton of Jörn Hinnerk Andresen (Professor for Choral Conducting at the Mozarteum University), Austria will present itself as a nation at the heart of Europe. Salzburg, in turn, lies at the geographical centre of Austria: the world-famous city of music is not only the birthplace of Mozart, but also saw the foundation of both the Mozarteum University and the AEC.

The tuba – that majestic, stately instrument that stands as a symbol for Austrian brass band culture. Tuba players? Famously good-natured and jovial. It’s no surprise then, that they are so well-connected throughout the world! In the case of Andreas Martin Hofmeir, Professor for Tuba at the Mozarteum University, it is his excellent Japanese connections that he has chosen to draw on for a collaborative tuba project as part of the EXPO 2025.
Around 20 students from Osaka College of Music and the Mozarteum University will come together to form an impressive ensemble in which the entire tuba family, from tenor to contra-bass, will be represented. They will perform a programme ranging from Mozart to Bernstein.
Concert 1: 10.30 a.m.
Concert 2: 1.00 p.m.

26. Mai 2025, Evening
Mozarteum University, Mozarteum Foundation, Mozarteum Orchestra. The unique history of the three Mozarteums, all of them prestigious institutions based in Salzburg, tells the story of the magical power of music: founded in 1841 on the 50th anniversary of Mozart’s death as the “Cathedral Music Society and Mozarteum”, with the broad aim of promoting and performing church music, to this day, they are dedicated to the three great pillars of music: the concert scene, archive and research, and excellence through education.
As part of the EXPO 2025, the University, Foundation and Orchestra will celebrate their common beginnings under the musical direction of Gernot Sahler (Professor for Opera at the Mozarteum University) together with Frank Stadler (Principal Leader of the Mozarteum Orchestra) and the Mozarteum University Symphony Orchestra. Musical highlights will include Mozart’s violin concerto, performed on the original Costa violin that belonged to Mozart himself, and scenes from the opera “Don Giovanni”. In addition to a tantalising musical programme, the evening offers a striking visual aspect, as the fascinating history of Mozarteum³ is told through moving images.

Susanne Tiefenbacher: ‘Sound of Music puppets in Japan for the first time’
‘We are delighted to be returning to Japan with the Salzburg Marionettes, especially as we were represented at the first Osaka Festival in 1958,’ says Susanne Tiefenbacher, Managing Director of the Salzburg Marionette Theatre, looking forward to a special return. "Puppetry and puppet theatre has a long tradition in Japan and is a highly esteemed art form. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre has repeatedly enjoyed great popularity in the course of several guest performances. In the anniversary year of ‘The Sound of Music’, we are presenting the puppet theatre production in Japan for the first time, thus complementing a cultural-touristic part of Salzburg's diverse EXPO presentations."
